Winnie W. Huang ’92

In her one-year term as president, Winnie W. Huang ’92, has made an impressive mark on the Dartmouth Club of Los Angeles. Before becoming president in July 2015, Winnie served as a board member in the late ’90s and again from 2013-2015.
Winnie is a visionary leader who is not afraid to take action. Under Winnie’s guidance, the board achieved – and even surpassed – all nine of its goals for the year. The goal to increase dues collection by $5,000 was surpassed by a remarkable $8,000, and the club blew past the goal of two service events by hosting 10 events. The Los Angeles club also doubled the number of events held. Kayaking the Los Angeles river, a Homecoming bonfire on the beach, an Oscars countdown party with Dartmouth Alumni in Entertainment and Media, a spring mixer with Dartmouth Asian Pacific American Alumni Association, and an Alumni Day of Service event at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center are just a few examples of the breadth of the club’s programs.
Winnie’s leadership has ensured a larger, more diverse, and better prepared club board. An improved Nominating Committee process better matched interested alumni leaders with the position for which they are best suited. Intentional outreach resulted in a 24-member board with liaisons to all nine Affiliated and Shared Interest Groups. Winnie also strengthened the club structurally through reviewing and improving protocols and by entrusting the revision of the club constitution to her predecessor, Janine Avner ‘80.
With close to 3,000 alumni and parents, there is a risk that our Dartmouth community in Los Angeles could lack that feeling of family that we treasure. However, Winnie’s efforts to use the club’s weekly e-newsletter to feature a dues-paying member as “member of the month” and highlight leader accomplishments in “Give a Rouse,” combined with her personal touches like individually emailing the 100+ admitted students in the area and sending handwritten notes to thank event chairs built a connected Dartmouth family throughout greater Los Angeles.
Winnie, thanks for your tireless leadership of the Dartmouth Club of Los Angeles. What you and your team achieved in 12 months is remarkable and appreciated. Hurrah!
