Class Newsletter Editor of the Year,
26 or More Years Out

Flawless; one word to describe the Class of 1968's newsletters leading into their 45th reunion this June. Reflecting a deep love of stories, both old and new, and wonderful care in graphic presentation, the editor of The Transmission: The Dartmouth Class of 1968 Newsletter, David Gang -- in close partnership with Roberta Hillenberg-Gang, his wife -- has created a class newsletter that sets the standard for delight and engagement. Both Dartmouth and the Class of 1968 must take special note of their excellence.

Stepping into the newsletter editor role full-time in 2010, Dave, who pulls together and crafts the content, and Roberta, who with her long professional graphic design experience executes the newsletter layout, team up to create a newsletter where every issue published arrives at home heavy with lasting value.

On the cover of each newsletter in his Editor's Note, Dave makes every word count. Weaving together personal perspectives with historic Dartmouth news with classmates, and global views with details, his welcome letters generously invite every reader to open the cover and linger long among the pages. Once inside, readers discover an engaging blend of stories that encourage an ongoing conversation among classmates. Examples include a no-holds-barred discussion on the High Cost of Higher Education Dartmouth Style, several articles about books written by classmates, an ongoing feature of photo "Memories of our Dartmouth Years," and a wonderful, two-page, in-depth article about Lou's Restaurant in Hanover where the reader could almost taste the cinnamon-warm apple pie just served.

Dave graduated from Dartmouth with a major in psychology. As an undergraduate, he played in the renowned Dartmouth Marching Band and studied in France as part of Dartmouth's Foreign Study Abroad program. After graduation, Dave earned his MD degree at Georgetown University and completed his pathology residency at St. Elizabeth's Hospital/Tufts-New England Medical Center.

Dave and Roberta now livein Longmeadow, Massachusetts. They have three children: Alexander, Jonathan, and Nicholas. When not editing his class newsletter, Dr. David Gang serves as chief, Division of Anatomic Pathology at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. His areas of interest include gastrointestinal and liver pathology, pediatric pathology, and perinatal and placental pathology. In addition, Dave serves as professor of pathology at Tufts University. Dave has been a participation agent for the Dartmouth College Fund and is active with the Pioneer Valley Dartmouth Club.

David and Roberta, your caring, your craft, and your consistency set a clear standard for what a class newsletter can do both for any class and for Dartmouth. It is with the greatest pride that the Class Newsletter Editors Association honors you with the 2013 Class Newsletter of the Year Award.
